Understanding Headaches & TMJ Pain

Headaches and jaw pain can have many contributing factors. The muscles and joints of your neck and jaw work closely together, and limitations in mobility, muscle tension, or movement can contribute to symptoms in the head, face, neck, and jaw.

TMJ disorders affect the temporomandibular joint and surrounding muscles that allow you to open and close your mouth, chew, and speak. Your Doctor of Physical Therapy will assess your symptoms, neck and jaw mobility, muscle function, and movement to determine whether physical therapy is appropriate and develop a treatment plan based on your findings.

Common Headache & TMJ Conditions

TMJ Dysfunction

TMJ dysfunction can cause jaw pain, stiffness, clicking, or difficulty opening your mouth and chewing. We assess the jaw, surrounding muscles, and neck to identify factors that may be contributing to your symptoms.

Cervicogenic Headaches

Cervicogenic headaches originate from structures in the neck and may be associated with neck pain, stiffness, or limited movement. Treatment focuses on addressing the mobility and movement impairments identified during your examination.

Jaw Muscle Pain

Tension or irritation in the muscles surrounding the jaw can contribute to facial pain, discomfort with chewing, and difficulty opening or closing your mouth comfortably. Treatment may include hands on care, mobility, and exercises based on your individual findings.

Neck Related Headaches

Neck stiffness, muscle tension, and movement limitations can contribute to certain types of headaches. We evaluate how your neck moves and functions to determine whether treating these factors may help improve your symptoms.
